Supervised Consumption Services (SCS)

We are now able to offer a safe place for people to use drugs under the direct supervision of medically trained staff to promote harm reduction and decrease the harm and deaths linked with opioid use. Safe consumption sites connect people to health and social services, provide harm reduction supports such as sterile equipment, and encourage safer drug use. Staff is on hand to administer naloxone in the event of an opioid overdose. They also reduce impact on Emergency Medical Services attending to drug overdoses. We do not provide site users with drugs.

According to AHS, in 2017 in Alberta, 733 people died of opioid overdoses including fentanyl.

Supervised consumption services, along with needle exchanges, naloxone, and opioid dependency treatment, help reduce harm from substance use, including HIV, Hepatitis C, bacterial infections, and fatal overdoses.

There are 2 other sites in the Edmonton downtown core that are collectively available 24/7. The Royal Alexandra Hospital also has services available, however it is for in-patient use only. These sites are one of the responses to Alberta’s opioid crisis.

Our job is to educate, support, empathize, and ensure the safety of individuals presenting to the Supervised Consumption Services within our Edmonton community. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us.
